I made a cake today!!!!!!!! I really enjoyed making it, and had a positive, stress-free attitude the whole time! Yay! It was an orange cake with a glacé icing (powdered sugar and orange juice), and I decorated it with the orange buttercream filling and some of the marigold flowers that I crystallized last night. I was so proud of it! I didn't get a chance to make anything else (I was supposed to do a chicken salad), but my teacher said the cake was my top priority. Man, I ate a ridiculous amount of cake today. There was coffee cake with coffee buttercream, chocolate cake, lemon cake, and orange cake. WOW. Of course I had to taste all of them! I haven't had a whole lot of chocolate lately :'(, so it was nice to have some today!
I didn't get best cake in the cake-off, but that's okay! I was still really happy with it, which is what's really important I guess. The chocolate cakes dominated the winning 4, which makes sense because you could do so much with them! Check out one of the beauties!

I also managed to get a time-lapse too! Sadly my phone died (UGH! And from 100% TOO!), so it didn't show me icing it. :)
The rest of the day went pretty well! I had a bit of english breakfast tea during lunch, so the caffeine kept me from having a sugar crash in demo! I went on a really really really great run afterwards. I haven't run that pace on a steady run in a very long time, if not ever!! Maybe cake's the way to go? I met some more cows right as I was turning around and they talked to me a little bit :) I love how they always look at me when I stop to take a picture. Usually if I stay there long enough, they'll walk over to me. Here's a video I got of them. I had been running for awhile and for some reason could only think to keep saying "hello" to the cows the whole time. You can here them saying hi back if you listen hard enough! :D I also passed by some horseback riders on the road. So cool! I don't think you'd get that a whole lot in America.
Right after the run, Nan and Bren and I went to the Ballymaloe House to watch a screening of a movie called "Symphony of the Soil." I would highly recommend it! I think that viewing the soil as a living organism is a really important conversation that we need to be having right now. Watching farmers and soil scientists from around the world is inspiring, especially seeing organic farmers who have a lot of success when they focus on encouraging healthy soil. It makes me want to do farm work again, though I don't know if I could do it as my only career. Maybe a farm and restaurant? Now THERE'S an idea ;).
Well, this movie has certainly got the wheels turning, that's for sure. Now it's been yet another late night. I can't believe it's already Friday tomorrow!!! This week has absolutely flown by!!! Well, I reckon I ought to get some sleep. Tomorrow, I'm going to make a curly kale soup, brown soda bread, roasted bacon (which was absolutely delicious today! I can't wait to show pictures tomorrow), and potentially some gluten free chocolate cookies with roasted hazelnuts.
One thing I learned today: creaming butter by hand is EXHAUSTING, as you can probably see in my time lapse :).
Best part of my day: talking to the cows. :D
