Today was pretty great! The kitchen work was straightforward and I didn't feel too stressed out! Here's what I made...
- Moutabal (or baba ganoush): I roasted eggplant directly on the gas flame, then peeled it, mashed it up with tahini, lemon, salt, pepper, and pomegranate, and VOILA! It looked kinda funny, but I really enjoyed the smoky flavor.
- White Irish soda bread! Such a simple bread! It mixes in a matter of seconds, then goes in the oven for an hour.
- Crème caramel: yummmm. I had a blast creating caramel designs to decorate my crème caramels! Sadly I took my crèmes out of the ramekins too soon and they broke on me, but here's what I had!
The afternoon demo covered an incredible amount of dishes that we'll be making tomorrow - wow. We'll learn how to gut and fillet a fish tomorrow, and also some people will be frying stuffed zucchini blossoms. One of the more interesting dishes was a surprisingly delicious sautéed cucumber, which was diced cucumber lightly cooked in butter with fennel. Here's a display of all the things Rory demonstrated to us! The other two photos are some shots I took afterwards - I thought the lighting was particularly beautiful :).
Right after the demo, I went mackerel fishing with some of the students at the pier in Ballycotton, which is just 15 minutes down the road. It was so peaceful watching the sun go down behind the small town of Ballycotton with the salty sea breeze softly blowing on our faces. I managed to catch a decent sized mackerel too, which added to the fun! Later, we took back to practice our filleting skills and eat! :D. Yummy! Here are some of the shots I got before my camera died! To explain the one with my hand, after taking a smaller fish off the hook, I realized I had grown some scales and I thought they had a nice aesthetic!
I hope everyone's been having a great week so far! Tomorrow's Friday!!!! Woohoo!!! :) It sure feels like this week has flown by. Until tomorrow!
